Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
